The NCAA Division I softball tournament field has been announced, and once again the ultimate destination is Oklahoma City for the Women’s College World Series.
The 64-team bracket was unveiled Sunday night, with four-team regionals at 16 sites set to get underway later this week. Those 16 regional winners will advance to the super regionals, and those eight best-of-three series winners will move on to OKC. The event has been dominated by a certain program in recent years — more on that below —but this year’s tournament figures to be more wide open with numerous title contenders. Whether you’re new to the sport or a long-time follower, here’s what you need to know about the 2024 field.
Oklahoma will be going for its fourth consecutive national title. The Sooners enter on a bit of a roll having won the Big 12 tournament, but they haven’t been as dominant this season. Fellow league members Texas and Oklahoma State should also be in the hunt. The SEC also has its share of high seeds, including league tournament champ Florida and perennial powers Tennessee and LSU, while UCLA and Stanford lead the west-coast candidates. If you’re looking for a possible newcomer to the WCWS, watch out for ACC champ Duke, hoping to reach Oklahoma City for the first time after superregional appearances the last two seasons.
Texas catcher Reese Atwood is one of the nation’s most dangerous sluggers, earning Big 12 player of the year honors mashing 21 homers and driving in a school record 86 runs. Oklahoma lost some star power from its recent title teams but still has Tiare Jennings (19 HR, 56 RBI). If you like pitching, Tennessee’s duo of Payton Gottshall and Carlyn Pickens, Oklahoma State ace Lexi Kilfoyl and Duke stopper Jala Wright are names to know.
