Round 2 of the PGA Championship did not disappoint as an already crowded field came together for a stirring end to the day. Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa hold a share of the lead heading into the final day with a traffic jam of talent just behind them.
The second round began with off-course drama as world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was arrested following a traffic incident outside Valhalla Golf Club. He was later released and returned to the course at a rescheduled tee time. Scheffler struggled to put his classic round together, finishing with a 2-over 73, which puts him tied for 24th in the field.
Xander Schauffele staved off a run from a number of golfers with a 3-under 68, which was good enough to hold onto the top spot. Although that is now shared by a consistent effort from Morikawa, whose five birdies helped him finish 15-under for the tournament.
Sahith Theegala is just one stroke back heading into Sunday, followed by a leaderboard that includes Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Rose, Justin Thomas and Tony Finau.
Golf icon Tiger Woods struggled in Round 2 and ultimately missed the cut after shooting a 6-over-77 on Friday. After Round 2 was cut short due to darkness, 18 golfers finished their first round after the fog cleared on Saturday.
Here's the latest on Saturday's Round 3 action:
Collin Morikawa capped off a stirring day with a x-under 67, which takes him to 15-under on the tournament. That's good for a share of the lead with Xander Schauffele who has been batting away all comers Saturday.
The previous lone leader finished with a 3-under 68 to go into tomorrow amid a crowded leaderboard.
Scheffler's off-course drama was the story of the PGA Championship ahead of Saturday's action. He was in the second-to-last group of the day and things did not go well for the world No. 1.
He had as many bogeys in the first four holes of Round 3 than he did in the first two rounds combined. By the 15th hole, Scheffler tallied six bogeys and four birdies. At 18, Scheffler birdied to close the day at 2-over. That marked his first round over par since Aug. 26, a streak of 41 rounds.
DeChambeau shot an impressive 6-under on Friday to stay in the top 10 heading into Round 3. He started the day with a birdie at the first hole and notched two more by the closing holes of the day. He rounded out his Saturday with his second eagle of the PGA Championship at the 18th hole.
Morikawa couldn't catch Xander Schauffele in Round 1 with a 66 to Schauffele's 62. In Round 2, Morikawa caught up to sit one stroke behind in second. An bogey at the second hole put him on the back foot early on in Round 3 today but he responded with a pair of birdies to remain one stroke behind Schauffele entering the back nine.
At 15, Morikawa hit an 129-yard shot to move within six feet of the hole after two strokes. An easy putt sealed the birdie and sole possession of first place for the first time Saturday.
The lead group featuring Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, and Sahith Theegala have remained at or near the top of the leaderboard for most of Round 3. Only Shane Lowry's record-tying performance closed the gap.
The 15th hole saw a big change in the order, though.
First, Theegala's birdie put him at 13-under. Morikawa responded with a birdie to stay one stroke ahead at 14-under. Schauffele - who had just one bogey so far in the PGA Championship - double-bogeyed to lose at least a share of the lead for the first time today. He sits tied for second with Theegala and Lowry for second at 13-under.
Theegala entered Saturday just two strokes behind Schauffele for the lead. Things didn't start out well in Round 3 with back-to-back bogeys in at the fifth and sixth holes. His birdie at the ninth hole turned things around, though.
He racked up four more birdies through the 15th hole to move into a tie for second at 13-under.
Schauffele pulled out of a brief tie atop the leaderboard with a birdie at the 10th hole. That moved him one stroke clear of Morikawa and Shane Lowry. Four holes later, the world No. 3 golfer dropped in a putt from 29 feet out to notch his third birdie of the day and take a two-stroke lead.
Thomas jumped up to the top 10 by the final hole of Round 3. Five birdies and just two bogeys preceded a chance at an eagle at the final hole of the day. Much like Lowry, Thomas missed it by just inches, settling for his sixth birdie of the day for a 4-under-67. He scored a 67 in Round 2 as well.
For the second time at the 2024 PGA Championship, a golfer tied the men's major championship record for the lowest round. Thursday was Xander Schauffele and today was Shane Lowry.
Lowry had eight birdies through the first 16 holes. On the 17th, he birdied once again to move one closer to breaking the record. His putt on the 18th for a record-setting birdie missed by mere inches.
He settled for par on the 18th for a 9-under-62 on the day. He joins Schauffele, Rickie Fowler (2023 U.S. Open), and Branden Grace (2017 British Open) for the lowest round in a men's major golf championship.
Shane Lowry has been the top golfer of the day. Six birdies on the front nine alone pushed him near the top of the leaderboard. His ninth birdie of the day at the 17th hole briefly put him into a tie for first with Xander Schauffele for the lead at 13-under. But both Schauffele and Morikawa birdied at the 10th hole, putting the former in first by one stroke and latter in a tie with Lowry for second at 13-under.
Finau bogeyed to start the day and responded with a birdie on the second hole. At the seventh hole, he bogeyed once again and bounced back even stronger. Finau notched four straight birdies from the ninth through the 12th holes to jump back up the leaderboard.
Louisville native Thomas tallied four birdies on the front nine but his first of the back nine was one of the more impressive shots of the day. Thomas sank a chip shot from nearly 90 feet out to make it in two shots on the 14th hole.
Spieth was 4-under in 29th after Friday's action in Round 2. His Round 3 didn't start off well with a bogey at the first hole but he went to work from there, notching an eagle and birdie in the front nine before another three birdies on the back nine to post a 4-under for the day.
Rose started the day in 23rd but is up to a tie for fourth thanks to one of the best scores of the day so far. His seventh birdie of the day at the 15th hole puts him at 6-under for the day and 11-under overall.
Schauffele, who is now 8-under for the round, birdies seven and now has full control of the lead. The golfer is now 13-under and is putting together yet another special round.
A birdie at the fifth hole put Morikawa tied with Schauffele at the top of the leaderboard at 12-under. Two holes later, he was close to another birdie but missed a putt from roughly 10 feet out. He settled for par and remains at 1-under for Round 3 through seven holes.
Lowry's off to the hottest start of anyone in Round 3. He's at six-under through the first nine with six birdies on the day. He'll wrap up his day earlier than leaders like Schauffele, Morikawa, and Theegala but is climbing up the leaderboard quickly.
Morikawa started the day one stroke back from Schauffele at the top of the leaderboard. A bogey at the 2nd hole dropped him one more stroke back from Schauffele early on but he made up for it with a birdie at the next hole.
The rough start for Scottie Scheffler continues as he bogeys on No. 3, causing him to drop out of the top 20 on the leaderboard. It doesn't look better on the next hole, as he hits it into the crowd and is scrambling to get it up and out at 4.
Tony Finau has performed exceptionally well throughout the tournament and has continued to impress over the weekend. On Friday, Finau shot a 2-under-par 69 and began Saturday tied for eighth place.
Finau made an impressive second shot on the 2nd hole on Saturday, putting him at 9-under and tying for fifth place.
Cameron Smith eagles the seventh hole to go 6-under, while Jordan Spieth matches his eagle to go 6-under, the first eagle of his PGA Championship career.
Min Woo Lee's performance on Friday during Round 2 of the PGA Championship was nothing short of remarkable. He catapulted from a modest T85 to an impressive T16, a staggering climb that left spectators in interest into his performance heading into the weekend. Lee's three chip-ins at Valhalla Golf Club solidified his position in the competition.
Lee's journey in professional golf began in 2019 and has already competed in 29 PGA events, with his most recent victories coming from the 2023 SJM Macao Open and 2023 Fortinet Australian PGA Championship.
The 25-year-old Australian is no stranger to the PGA Championship. This year marks his third appearance in the prestigious tournament, with his best finish to date being a commendable T-18 last year.
Friday witnessed a significant event as Scottie Scheffler's journey to the Valhalla Golf Club was abruptly interrupted by the Louisville Metro Police.
As reported by ESPN's Jeff Darlington, Scheffler was navigating around a crash scene when a police officer ordered him to halt. Despite the command, Scheffler persisted, driving a further 10 to 20 yards towards the entrance of the golf course.
The police officer than stopped Scheffler's car as he entered the golf course and the officer then pulled him out of the car and placed him in handcuffs.
Darlington also reported that he was standing at the entrance and witnessed the event. Scheffler asked him, "Can you help?"
"You need to get out of the way," Darlington said the officer told him. "There's nothing you can do. He's going to jail."
By 8:30 a.m. ET, Scheffler was released by police and was heading back into the golf course to begin play at 10:08 a.m. ET. Scheffler shoots a 66 for Round 2, placing him in the top five heading into Saturday.
"This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers," Scheffler said in a statement posted to social media. "It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.
"Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective."
Jordan Spieth, Max Homa and Cameron Smith tee off at 11:28 a.m. ET. Here is the complete list of tee times for Round 3 of the PGA Championship.
Round 2 action, which was suspended at 8:41 p.m. ET on Friday due to darkness, was delayed Saturday morning due to heavy fog and did not resume until 9:40 a.m. ET. The start time for Round 3 will begin at 11:28 p.m. ET.
Leader Xander Schauffele will tee off for Round 3 at 1:40 p.m. ET, playing alongside Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala.
